HVAC and Energy Efficiency
Considering how often the phrase “energy efficient” is mentioned, it seems that most consumers would know what it means, right? The truth is—many home and business owners do not really understand energy ratings, including how advancements in HVAC systems can benefit them and save money.
To begin, consider your AC energy efficiency. Specialists measure the efficiency of these systems with a SEER rating. The SEER rating is the measure of the amount of electrical energy relating to the cooling output. Simply put, a higher SEER rating means a more efficient air conditioner.
The efficiency of central furnaces is measured differently. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) represents the ratio of yearly heat output of the furnace related to the total yearly fossil fuel energy.
For homes that are heated by a heat pump, there is yet another efficiency rating. Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF) describes the total space heating that is required during a heating season.
The U. S. Department of Energy provides requirements and standards for what is considered energy efficient. For instance, the SEER rating must be a 14 (minimum) on all new air conditioning equipment. In turn, when it comes to the AFUE Rating for gas forced air furnaces, the mandated rating must be at least 78% to be considered energy efficient. As for the HSPF, a rating between 8 and 10 represents the most energy efficient heat pumps.
The question for many homeowners in regards to their heating and cooling systems is—If my system is older, but is still working okay, should I get a newer system? Chances are, if your system is older, monthly utility bills are higher. For some, investing in a new system or other alternative is worth the cost upfront. Today, highly advanced HVAC systems not only save energy, they are environmentally safe, have a variety of speeds for superior comfort, advanced filters for better air quality within the home, and adjustable air conditioners that respond to outside temperatures.
